Anthony + Matthew's Home Remodel
Anthony + Matthew's Home Remodel
Whole Home Renovation in Portland, OR
Anthony + Matthew's 1913 home has classic features but was ready for a complete remodel tailored to their lives and tastes.
On the main floor, the public rooms were opened up for better flow, and the kitchen was thoroughly remodeled—with generous storage for Matthew's homegrown canned goods. A shared closet between entry hall and guest room is now dedicated to the guest room. A new full-height cabinetry piece at the entry can handle all the coats, hats, and shoes you can throw at it. Upstairs, a poky second bedroom and an awkward tiny bathroom were gutted to make way for a sumptuous primary suite with newly vaulted ceilings. The new bathroom is directly accessible to the primary bedroom but also accessible from the stair hall. It now includes a generous double vanity, a soaking tub, a 2-person shower and a private toilet room.
I asked Michael to help with my whole house remodel because I wanted to get past trendy to timeless. Michael’s rigorous understanding of architecture broadly and Portland in particular led to a home that supports a modern lifestyle and is completely authentic—it looks and functions as if it is the way it should have always been, even though we made significant design decisions. What I didn’t appreciate until later is the extent to which Michael acts as his client’s fiduciary in every aspect of the project, advocating for quality, value, timeliness and style. I couldn’t be happier.

Main bedroom before + after
Newly vaulted ceilings add light and space to the main bedroom.

Salvaged glass
To open up the living room to the dining room, an original china cabinet unfortunately had to be removed. But we were able to re-use the leaded glass in the new full-height kitchen cabinet.

Kitchen before + after
The kitchen is primarily Matthew's domain, and he here he has a generous galley at his disposal. French doors access a patio table and the garden.

Crisp details
This home has exceptional original detailing at the ceiling, which we highlighted in warm gray. A retro-pendant adds a touch of quirkiness while keeping it elegant.
