Dawn + Jeff's Home Remodel + Addition

Whole Home Renovation in Portland, OR

This remodel absorbs a cramped 1-story cottage into a wholly transformed, spacious new home. With a second child on the way and desire for more space, Dawn + Jeff considered moving. But they loved their neighborhood. They had also put work into their home, replacing first floor windows and putting considerable effort into landscaping.

Instead of selling or demolishing their old house, the owners upcycled it into something new. The second floor contains a master suite, 2 kids' rooms and a Jack-and-Jill kids' bath. Ground floor updates include a renovated kitchen and a new mud room, as well as a longed-for garage. Finishes were kept to a tight budget, but bright splashes of color steer clear of generic new construction.

This project was published in Oregon Home.

We gave Michael complete freedom and he just went for it. He was exceptional at cultivating the space for our needs and seemed to know intuitively how to make it all work.
Before

Before

The key challenge with this project was to absorb an approximately 1200-square-foot original house into a wholly new design. Prior to our renovation, the owners had replaced all first floor windows. We retained that investment as well as all first floor walls, floors, and a bathroom that had been recently renovated.

The budget for finishes was tight, but Dawn + Jeff opted for punches of color to add pizzazz. Teal and sky-blue bath tile keeps an inexpensive American Orlean bath tile from being boring. Beautiful quilts by Dawn's mother decorate the master suite.

The kids' bath announces itself as such, with fun coral tile and a crayon-inspired Marmoleum pattern that celebrates drawing on the floors.

A longed-for garage

A longed-for garage

A one-car garage might not sound like a luxury, but in dense urban Portland it can be. The remodel accommodates a garage and driveway at the back of the house.
