Drake Tower Condo Remodel
Condo Renovation in Chicago
Located in the residential tower at Chicago's iconic Drake Hotel, this 2-bedroom pied-à-terre receives a comprehensive renovation. The owners' primary residence is out of state, but frequent travel to Chicago resulted in this home away from home.
Michael Howells provided complete architectural + interiors services for this project. The driving concept was to celebrate the vibrancy of this great art city, and the owners' classic yet bold tastes. The shifting blues threaded through the various finishes and furnishings are inspired by the stunning views of Lake Michigan.
This project was featured in Modern Luxury.
This was our second project with Michael and we felt his interior design skills shined in the pre-war building format. The Perzel lighting fixtures, cabinet detail, paint and rug choices were all things we would never have thought of on our own and are complimented by nearly every visitor to the apartment. Michael has an intuitive sense of what will suit us, while also putting forward an original vision. We are very happy with the results.

Complete design
We provided all design services for this project, from interior architecture, detailing, and furnishings right down to the knives and forks. A custom fireplace screen was designed by Michael Howells, with a little help from Piet Mondrian.

Custom built-ins
We designed built-ins throughout the project, including the primary suite bed and night stands. Under-bed storage maximizes efficiency. But retaining space beneath the bed allows the owners to experience more of the beautiful custom Jan Kath rug.

A touch of history
We refurbished the Drake Tower's signature bronze door hardware, for use throughout the apartment.

Deco-inspired
All lighting in the apartment is by the renowned Parisian firm Atelier Jean Perzel.

Small-space solutions
At the tiny main bathroom we squeezed in a semi-powder room: the shower wall acts as a privacy screen between shower and toilet.

A crisp galley
The small galley kitchen is a model of efficiency, with state-of-the-art Valcucine cabinetry and countertops.

Bedroom before + after
A fresh design updates this special apartment, while keeping it classic.

Dining before + after
Pale blue Farrow & Ball wallpaper in the foyer transitions to high-gloss cobalt cabinetry in the dining room. A custom Jan Kath rug runs the full length of the living + dining room, unifying the space.
