Irvington Kitchen + Back Yard Remodel
Irvington Kitchen + Back Yard Remodel
Kitchen + Back Yard Renovation in Portland, OR
After completing an attic remodel for this client, we had the pleasure of designing an exuberant, light-filled kitchen + breakfast room in their historic Irvington home, as well as a deck + patio.
The kitchen + breakfast room was inspired by the owners' Scandinavian heritage, as well as by a café they love in Europe. Bookshelves make for easy lingering over a snack and something to read. The kitchen's literary theme extends into the tile pattern. Stacked 3" x 9" tile echoes spines on a bookshelf, and give a subtle nod to the author who cooks here.
Terrace doors provide access to the deck + patio, with a dining area, hot tub, outdoor shower, and firepit.
The backyard was featured in Oregon Home.
Our new kitchen is a dream, with room for everything—and everyone—we love. On a gray day, there's nothing better than hanging out with a cup of coffee and a book or the newspaper, surrounded by cheerful colors.

Built-in bookshelves
Lined at one side with a full wall of bookshelves, the kitchen has ample room for cookbooks, literature, crockery, and tchotchkes, while ensuring precious objects are far from heat and moisture.

Books for breakfast
Floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves make a library of the breakfast room.

Easy transitions
A Saarinen marble-topped tulip table centers the breakfast room, with French doors opening to the new deck + patio.

Soothing sounds
A cast-concrete fountain at the patio adds an element of serenity and privacy.

Wood + water
Brazilian ipe decking, chosen for its durability, transitions to a cedar soaking tub.

Materials mix
Wood meets board-formed concrete at the retaining walls, softened by bamboo and a stained cedar fence, all chosen to weather well in the rainy Pacific Northwest climate.

Color outside
We extended the tile and color scheme from the kitchen to the large outdoor planter, adding a punch of color to the otherwise neutral scheme.
