Linda's Kitchen + Dining Remodel
Linda's Kitchen + Dining Remodel
Kitchen + Dining Room Renovation in Portland, OR
The color scheme for the kitchen in this 1940s home is inspired by dishware of that era—such as Jadeite and Fiestaware— and by Linda's love of color.
Infused with a vintage spirit, the new kitchen is also true to the present. The gut remodel extends throughout the first floor, and includes smoothed out ceilings, refinished floors, and a new hearth. Originally cut off from the dining room, the kitchen is now in easy relationship to the dining room and sitting room beyond. Custom-designed cabinets are painted in a color reminiscent of Jadeite dishware. Minimal cabinet door design also recalls the forties. Handmade coral tile adds a splash of cheerful color on drab gray days. A bi-level countertop divides kitchen from dining room and also doubles as a built-in sideboard for Linda's crockery.
This project was published by Better Homes & Gardens as well as The Kitchn.
Michael Howells designed and monitored the complete remodel of my home's kitchen, dining and living room. We met several times to discuss my personal style and preferences. All of his ideas were creative, artistically pleasing and practical. He visited my home weekly as the construction progressed to assure all was going according to our plans, thereby relieving me of this challenging task. Michael was very easy to work with and was the key factor in making my remodel a positive experience and wonderful success. My home has cottage charisma and I love it!

A big change
After living in her SW Portland cottage for decades, Linda gave herself the gift of a new kitchen in retirement.

Before
The previous kitchen was old, awkwardly laid out, and cut off from the dining room.

Small but spacious
The kitchen retains its small footprint but is made more efficient by opening up to the dining room. This creates counter and storage space and also lightens up the room overall. Awkward corners make the most of storage possibilities with hidden double-tiered Rev-a-Shelf units.

Coral + jade
Coral tile by Heath Ceramics contrasts with Jadeite-green painted cabinetry. The tile's beautiful, handmade textures and variations temper the bold color scheme.
