Better layout. Better flow. More cocktails. Sam + Jp's kitchen renovation transforms their small home.
With a small footprint and awkward layout, the kitchen of this Overlook home cramped the style of its owners. For the remodel, goals included growing the kitchen, improving the layout, and adding a wet bar. Along with a new backyard terrace, the owners also wanted a better connection between the kitchen and back yard.
Key moves involved changing the basement stair configuration, which freed up more wall area for kitchen cabinets and made for more intuitive circulation. Two small bedrooms became one larger room, with a slice of the former bedroom given over to the new kitchen + wet bar. Indoors + outdoors are better connected via a new window at the sink, new slider door set, and an exterior landing with steps cascading down to the new terrace.
We could not be happier with our new kitchen. We came into the project knowing our dreams of transitional indoor/outdoor spaces were going to be bigger than our budget, and throughout the design phase Michael helped us work through our big ideas to distill out the things that mattered most to us and then bring them to life in ways we could never have imagined.
We were drawn to the bold use of color in Michael’s portfolio, and this really came to life in our project as he encouraged us to make a leap of faith with the multi-colored tile featuring so prominently throughout the space. The kitchen is now the bright, colorful, happy center of the home we’ve always wanted, and a space that is uniquely us.
Before + after
The original kitchen was hemmed in by the entry to the basement stair. By relocating the basement staircase, we improved the flow of the kitchen and gained valuable real estate for much-needed kitchen cabinetry. Roll over to see the kitchen before + after.
Uncluttered
Appliance garages at the main kitchen area keep countertop appliances neatly tucked away. Minimalist cabinetry detailing and pulls enhance the serene feel of the kitchen—and make subtle reference to the original era of the house (1960s).
Two blues + a green
A custom 3-color custom Heath Ceramics tile backsplash is both functional and acts an abstract mural for the kitchen and adjacent wet bar.
Bright + connected
In the new design, the kitchen enjoys more natural light and a smoother indoor-outdoor transition.
